Your Kick'n Bass Fishing Report for March 28, 2019

From the deck of the Kick’n Bass pontoon

Hope all of you survived this past winter and now it’s time to fish! In the last month the water level has gone up to 363 feet but TVA has drained the lake back to normal at 354.6. Temp as of yesterday afternoon was 54 degrees. In between all the rain and storms I have been fishing and the Crappies are just now getting into feeding for the spawn. Numbers are not normal yet but the size is tremendous. Plenty of shad this year unlike last spring when it seemed the crappies were starving with nothing to eat. Shad are everywhere.

Lake conditions

The water level is still on a slow drawdown. We are at 354.6 and dropping some more but not much. Usually TVA starts bringing the level up about April 1st. You can check the link below for more info. TVA has a phone app also.

Crappies

Crappies have been scattered lately. We are picking up some beautiful ones, both black and white, and they are chubby from feeding on shad all winter. Eggs are not all that developed so my guess is the spawn is still a few weeks off. We have been spider rigging and long lining for crappies and have had success with both. Best baits so far are the Crappie Hut Jigs Patriot colored 1/16th ounce jig. Yellow/black has been good also. Have also had success with the Jenko Mermaid jig in the Dirty Milk color. I love the fork tail on this bait. Purple passion has also been a good color. 0.5 mph has been our best speed but with all the wind two drift socks have been necessary. Most fish have been caught in 10 to 15 feet of water.

Whitebass and Yellowbass

Have only caught a few yellows with not much size but they do frequent the same areas as crappies do.

Catfish

Haven’t caught any yet but have heard of some blues being caught on crawlers.

Largemouth

Only a couple small bass so far but big bags have been caught in various tournaments.

Bluegills and Redears

Haven’t caught either yet.

Attaboy

Our 10-year-old granddaughter Sophia went with us on our 48th wedding anniversary to Kentucky Lake. She caught a total of 11 fish, Granny caught 7 and Papaw was last with 3. Sophia wants to go back. Thanks to Captain Rick of Kick’n Bass!
